Background Remover
A tool that automatically detects and cuts out the subject of an image, then makes the background transparent or replaces it with a solid color, a blur, or another image. It supports threshold and edge-blur adjustments, brush touch-ups, and automatic cropping, and saves as transparent PNG or WebP. Recognition runs in your browser, and your image is never sent to a server.
Drag and drop an image, or paste with Ctrl/⌘+V
Supports PNG / JPEG / WebP
How to use
- Drag and drop an image, or load one with "Choose image". You can also paste with Ctrl/⌘+V.
- The recognition model (about 4.6 MB) is downloaded the first time, and then the subject is cut out automatically.
- Compare with the original using the slider, and choose a background: transparent, solid color, blur, or another image.
- If the cutout is rough, adjust the threshold and edges under "Refine", or use Erase and Restore under "Brush touch-up".
- Turn on "Crop margins to the subject" if needed, and download as PNG or WebP.
About this tool
The Background Remover cuts out just the subject from product photos, profile pictures, illustrations for documents, and more. You can make the background transparent to layer the subject over other images, create product images on a white background, or blur the background to make the subject stand out.
Subjects are detected with the lightweight version of U²-Net (u2netp), released under the commercially usable Apache License 2.0, running on onnxruntime-web (MIT). Browsers that support WebGPU use the GPU; others use the CPU via WebAssembly. The model and engine are served from this site, downloaded once, and saved in your browser.
Inference runs in a Web Worker, and your image is never sent to a server. Image orientation (EXIF) is corrected automatically, and images larger than 4096px on the long edge are scaled down to avoid running out of memory. Because the model is lightweight, touching up fine details such as hair with the brush is recommended.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose a higher-quality model?
Only the lightweight model (u2netp) is supported for now. Higher-quality models are very large (over 100 MB) and can't be self-hosted with this site's hosting, so they aren't supported.
Can I use the results commercially?
The model used (U²-Net) is released under the Apache License 2.0, which allows commercial use. However, be mindful of the copyright and portrait rights of the original images.
What if the cutout isn't clean?
Adjust the "Threshold" to change how much is kept, and use "Expand / shrink edges" to tidy the edges. Fix any remaining spots with Erase and Restore under "Brush touch-up". Images with simple backgrounds and clearly visible subjects give the cleanest results.
Is my image sent to a server?
No. Only the recognition model is downloaded; all image processing happens in your browser.
