Video to GIF & Video Compressor
A tool that converts MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV videos to animated GIFs, or compresses them to MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9), entirely in your browser. It supports trimming; frame rate, width, loop count, color reduction, and dithering for GIFs; and quality, target file size, resolution, and audio settings for compression. Your video is never uploaded to a server.
Drag and drop a video file
Supports MP4 / MOV / WebM / MKV (some formats such as AVI are not supported)
How to use
- Drag and drop a video file, or load one with "Choose video".
- Set the range (start and end) with the slider or by entering seconds. "Current time" sets the start or end to the playback position.
- For "To GIF", choose the frame rate, width, loop, palette, and dithering. For "Compress", choose the output format, quality (or target size), resolution, frame rate, and audio.
- Click "Convert to GIF" or "Compress" to see the progress and estimated time remaining. You can cancel at any time.
- Preview the result, check its size and reduction rate, and save it with "Download".
About this tool
The Video to GIF & Video Compressor turns screen recordings and videos you've shot into animated GIFs that are easy to share in chats and documents, or shrinks them to fit email and upload size limits.
Videos are read and written using your browser's built-in video processing (WebCodecs) through mediabunny (MPL-2.0; source code available at https://github.com/Vanilagy/mediabunny). There's no need to download the large ffmpeg.wasm, so the tool starts quickly and can use hardware encoding where available. GIFs are written with gifenc (MIT), with color reduction using a shared or per-frame palette and error-diffusion or Bayer dithering.
All processing runs in a Web Worker, and your video is never uploaded to a server. Supported codecs and output formats depend on your browser. Some formats such as AVI, and videos with codecs your browser doesn't support, can't be converted.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert AVI and other formats?
AVI isn't supported. MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV are supported, provided your browser can decode the video's codec (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, etc.). If it can't, try another browser.
How can I make the GIF smaller?
Shorten the range, reduce the width, lower the frame rate (around 10 fps), use a shared palette, or turn dithering off. For long videos or large frames, sharing as a video (MP4 or WebM) is far smaller than a GIF.
Will the output exactly match the target size?
The video bitrate is calculated from the video's length, so the actual size may vary slightly. If you must stay under a limit, enter a slightly smaller value.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything from loading to converting and saving happens in your browser.
