How to use
- Drag and drop a folder or an archive (ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ), or load one with "Choose folder" or "Choose archive".
- Once loaded, the structure appears as text under "Output".
- Use "Display settings" to change the depth to display, whether to show files, hidden files, and sizes, and the output style (tree, ASCII, indentation, or Markdown). Changes apply immediately.
- Enter names such as node_modules or *.log in "Names to exclude" to leave matching files and folders out of the output.
- Save the result with "Copy to clipboard" or "Download text".
About this tool
The Folder Tree Generator turns the contents of a folder into tree-style text using box-drawing lines such as "├──" and "└──". It's handy for adding a directory layout to a README or design document, explaining a project's structure in a chat or to an AI, or checking what's inside an archive before extracting it.
Archives are never extracted — only file names and sizes are read. For ZIP files, only the listing at the end of the file (the central directory) is read, so even large archives show up instantly. ZIP files with Shift_JIS file names, created on Japanese Windows, are supported too.
Folders are read using your browser's built-in features, and file contents are never read. Nothing you load is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Which archive formats are supported?
ZIP, TAR, and TAR.GZ (.tgz). The format is detected from the file contents, so ZIP-based files such as JAR or DOCX can also be loaded. 7z and RAR are not supported.
Why don't empty folders appear?
When you load a folder with the "Choose folder" button, browsers only provide the list of files, so empty folders can't be shown. To include empty folders, drag and drop the folder instead.
How is depth counted?
Items directly inside the loaded folder (or archive) are level 1. Choosing "Up to 2 levels" shows those items plus the items one level below them.
Are my files sent to a server?
No. Only file names and sizes are read, and all processing happens in your browser.
